Mountain Heritage
Avery County was settled by pioneer stock; people who pushed into these hills when the Blue Ridge Mountains were "the West," and the West was wild.
In general, these were stubborn folk. Individuals who did not like the King or the state telling them what to do, so they moved far away from the capitals of government in an effort to stay just out of reach. They could take care of themselves and they could take care of their own.
In the three centuries that Europeans have been in Avery County, we have developed a culture of our own. That culture is reflected in our music, our crafts, our churches, our legends, and our commitment to God's creation.
The stories you'll find here reflect a little of our mountain culture and illustrate how its teachings color the patchwork quilt that is our mountain heritage.
